Privacy Policy
Last updated: 9 June 2026
Note: This document is a working template prepared for Owne's app-store submission and is pending review by qualified legal counsel. It may be updated before and after Owne's public launch.
This Privacy Policy explains how Owne (“Owne”, “we”, “us”) collects, uses, shares, and protects your personal data when you use the Owne mobile app and website (the “Platform”). Owne is a zero-interest rent-to-own real-estate platform operating in Bengaluru, India.
By creating an account or using the Platform, you agree to the practices described here. If you do not agree, please do not use the Platform.
1. Who we are & scope
Owne acts as the data fiduciary (controller) for the personal data described in this policy. This policy applies to all users of the Platform — home buyers, investors, and prospective users — across our mobile apps (iOS and Android) and our website at app.owne.in.
It does not cover third-party websites or services we link to, which have their own privacy policies.
2. Data we collect & why
We collect only the data we need to run the Platform. The table below summarises the categories of personal data we process, why we process them, and the legal basis. It is organised to map to the data types used in Apple's App Privacy labels and Google Play's Data Safety section.
| Data type | Examples | Purpose | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contact info | Phone number, full name, email address | Create and secure your account, sign in via OTP, send service notices | Performance of contract; legitimate use |
| Identity & KYC | PAN, name on PAN, verification status | Verify identity, meet KYC and anti-fraud obligations for property transactions | Legal obligation; performance of contract |
| Financial info | Monthly income, existing EMIs, proof-of-funds and income documents | Assess affordability of a buyer plan and an investor’s suitability; match plans | Consent; performance of contract |
| Location | Login city/region (from IP); on mobile, precise device location if you allow it | Show relevant cities and “homes near me”; fraud prevention | Consent (precise location); legitimate use (coarse) |
| User content | Uploaded documents, property preferences, plans, messages to support | Operate the platform, review and match plans, provide support | Performance of contract; consent |
| Device & usage | Device identifiers, IP address, app/version, pages viewed, diagnostics | Keep the service secure and reliable, prevent abuse, improve the product | Legitimate use |
We collect this data when you provide it directly (e.g. signing up, completing onboarding, uploading documents, proposing a plan) and automatically as you use the Platform (e.g. device and usage data). We do not knowingly collect special-category data beyond the financial and identity information listed above, and we do not use your data for third-party advertising or tracking across other companies' apps and websites.
3. How we use your data
We use personal data to:
- Authenticate you securely using a one-time passcode (OTP) sent to your phone.
- Set up and operate your buyer or investor account.
- Verify your identity (KYC) and assess affordability or investor suitability so plans can be reviewed and matched.
- Show you relevant curated properties, including cities and “homes near me” where you have allowed location access.
- Process payments and maintain records of transactions.
- Provide customer support and respond to your requests.
- Keep the Platform secure, detect and prevent fraud and abuse, and comply with our legal obligations.
- Send you service-related communications (e.g. plan status, security notices). We do not send marketing messages without your consent.
4. Location data
On the web, we infer an approximate city/region from your IP address to show relevant listings. On mobile, the app may request access to your device's precise location solely to power the “homes near me” feature.
Precise location is collected only with your explicit permission, which you grant through your device's operating-system prompt. You can withdraw this permission at any time in your device settings; the rest of the Platform will continue to work without it. We do not use precise location for tracking or share it with advertisers.
6. Data retention
We keep personal data only for as long as needed for the purposes described here, or as required by law (for example, KYC and financial records may need to be retained for a statutory period after our relationship ends).
When you delete your account, we archive and then remove your live records as described in “Your rights” below, retaining only what we are legally required to keep or what is necessary to resolve disputes and enforce our agreements.
7. How we protect your data
We use technical and organisational measures to protect your data, including encryption in transit, access controls, row-level security on our database, server-side handling of sensitive credentials, and restricted access for personnel on a need-to-know basis. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and to notify you and the regulator of a personal-data breach as required by law.
8. Your rights
Subject to applicable law, including India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (“DPDP Act”), you have the right to:
- Access a summary of the personal data we hold about you and how we process it.
- Correct or update inaccurate or incomplete data.
- Erase your personal data where it is no longer required.
- Withdraw consent you previously gave (this does not affect prior processing).
- Nominate another individual to exercise your rights in the event of death or incapacity.
- Raise a grievance with our Grievance Officer (see below).
To exercise any of these rights, use the in-app controls described below or email privacy@owne.in.
9. Account & data deletion
You can delete your Owne account and associated personal data at any time, directly from the app. Go to your Profile and choose Delete account. You will see a summary of what will be removed and be asked to confirm.
When you confirm, we archive the records you own for legal and dispute-resolution purposes and then erase your live data, freeing your phone number for a fresh sign-up. Some information may be retained where we are legally required to keep it. If your account is linked to a shared record (for example, a property listing you submitted), self-serve deletion may be blocked and you will be asked to contact us so we can complete it manually.
You can also request deletion by emailing privacy@owne.in from your registered email or phone.
10. Children
The Platform is intended only for individuals who are 18 years or older. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If we learn that we have collected data from a person under 18, we will delete it. If you believe a minor has provided us data, please contact privacy@owne.in.
11. Compliance with India’s DPDP Act 2023
We process personal data in accordance with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. We rely on your consent or on legitimate uses permitted under the Act, give notice of the personal data we collect and the purposes, and honour the rights described above.
In line with the Act, we have appointed a Grievance Officer to address questions and complaints about how we handle your personal data:
- Grievance Officer: [Name to be appointed]
- Email: grievance@owne.in
- Address: Owne, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India [full registered address to be added]
We aim to acknowledge grievances promptly and resolve them within the timelines required by law. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may escalate to the Data Protection Board of India.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app. Your continued use of the Platform after an update means you accept the revised policy.
13. Contact us
For any questions about this policy or your personal data, contact us at privacy@owne.in.
